Program overview
ISDE (Instituto Superior de Derecho y Economía) will offer four courses within the Summer Program that will be held in Barcelona (C/ Badajoz, 73-77) during July 2011. The four courses are the following ones:
- Law of the European Union
- Derecho Procesal
- International and comparative sports law
- Legal English
The courses have been designed so that law students and also law practitioners from all over the world can enroll them. Enrolling in the Program will be a great opportunity to participate in a global learning experience.
Three of the courses will be taught in English and one of them (Derecho Procesal) will be taught in Spanish. The faculty is composed of leading authorities from the academia and profession world.
All the courses will be taught during the morning so that students can also take advantage of their stay in Barcelona to be able to discover and enjoy the city. The course will also be taught on different days and at different times so that the students can enroll, should they wish to, on all of the courses.
Courses
Law of the European Union
Description:
This course provides an introduction to the law and institutions of the European Union. The course will consider the following topics: European Union institutional structure and legal system, sources of European Union law, the treaty system as a European constitution, role of the European Court of Justice, and the policies of the UE. The course will also focus on the Economic and Monetary Union and other European policies. In addition, the course will also include some practical developments on the material law of the UE. Students will study on a case-law basis and power-point explanation of the four main freedoms in the EU: free movement of persons, free movement of workers, free movement of goods and free movement of capital.
Faculty:
Josep Mª Balcells is adjunct Professor of European Union Law and Partner with Baker & McKenzie in Barcelona. Law Degree by the University of Barcelona 1981-1986. Licence Spécial en Droit Communautaire. Brussels, ULB 1989-90. Former Treasurer and Member of the Managing Board of the Bar Association of Barcelona from June 2007 to June 2009. He has been a practicing member of the Barcelona Bar Association since 1986. Former President of the UE and International Law Section of the Barcelona Bar association, 2002-2007 Member of the Buenos Aires (Argentina) Bar Association and practicing lawyer in Baker & McKenzie Buenos Aires from 1998 to 2000. As lawyer, he provides legal advice related to international commercial contracting issues, business law, corporate transactions and competition issues on a regular basis. He is member of the European Steering Committee of the Commercial Practice Group at Baker & McKenzie.

Derecho Procesal
Este curso permite obtener una visión global de los procedimientos contenciosos más habituales en que se ven inmersos los litigantes de empresa: los procesos declarativos, las ejecuciones y los concursos. Asimismo el programa dedica un apartado al proceso arbitral y una introducción a los procesos con elementos internacionales.
El curso introduce al alumno en el conocimiento de los recursos técnicos y habilidades prácticas del litigante de empresa: normativa relevante, técnicas de redacción de escritos, estrategia, oratoria, negociación y actuación en sala.
Profesora:
Ana Ribó es Licenciada en Derecho por la Universidad de Barcelona (1989), Master en Derecho Mercantil por la Universidad de Londres (1990) y Diplomada en Derecho Arbitral por la Universitat Pompeu Fabra. Ana Ribó es socia del despacho Ventura Garcés & López Ibor, y está especializada en Procesal y Concursal.
Su práctica cubre todos los aspectos de la litigiosidad civil, comercial y societaria, lo que incluye, entre otros, asuntos de competencia desleal, conflictos contractuales (relativos a contratos de distribución, agencia, franquicia, ingeniería, financieros o contratos de fusiones y adquisiciones y de joint-venture), disputas entre socios y responsabilidad de administradores.
Está especializada en dirigir procesos complejos, incluyendo aquellos con elementos extranjeros, como procedimientos entre compañías de diferentes nacionalidades o ejecución de sentencias extranjeras.
Tiene una amplia experiencia en arbitraje, por haber actuado tanto como árbitro como abogado de alguna de las partes, así como en procedimientos de insolvencia

Description:
The International and Comparative Sports Law course explores contemporary legal issues in intercollegiate and professional sports. It examines federative, contract, disciplinary and labor law issues. A portion of the course will be devoted to the dispute resolution mechanisms in sports law, with special reference to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). In addition specific mention will be also made to the regulation of sport agents and to doping matters. This course provides an introduction to the concepts, institutions and general principles of sports law worldwide.
Faculty:
Jordi López has a Law Degree from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (1998). Master in Company Law from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (1999). Partner and Board Member at the law firm Pintó Ruiz & Del Valle in Barcelona. Practicing lawyer in the firm since 1998. Department of Corporate & Sports Law. Arbitrator at Tribunal Arbitral de Barcelona since 2007. Ad hoc clerk at Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), with seat in Lausanne (Switzerland) from 2004. Member of Club Español del Arbitraje and of the Corporate Team at Pannone Law Group. Lecturer in sports law and commercial law at ISDE and former lecturer in contract law at Fomento del Trabajo and Barcelona Activa. Author of several articles in the area of sports law, among others, Maintenance of contractual stability in the world of football. Special reference to the case “Webster”. Sports Law Research Center of Xi’an. University of Physical Education, P.R. of China, Shangai Sports Bureau, 2008, and Legal Regulation of Sports Betting in Spain and its History. Legal English
Description:
The objective of this intensive course is to meet the needs of legal professionals on the international stage. English is a language that is part of the everyday life of many international legal practitioners; however there is often the need for more specialist knowledge when faced with legal documents. The course aims to provide those attending with the opportunity to develop their legal skills by acquiring knowledge of legal terminology and concepts within the context of legal systems. The course shall take a practical approach to the acquisition of legal terminology and concepts by using legal documents and cases to allow the students to see the language in context and apply them in role-plays, discussion and the preparation of legal material themselves.
Faculty:
Diane Stephenson after attaining a law degree from the University of the South Bank went on to work in the Judicial Appointments Division of the House of Lords. Following law school she came to Barcelona and has subsequently specialized in the teaching of legal English to law
students and lawyers alike in institutions such as the Law Society of Barcelona, International University of Catalonia (UIC,) University of Barcelona, ISDE and so on, and also for practitioners at the major law firms in the city. Ms Stephenson also works as a translator of Spanish and Catalan legal documents to English.
